The Veil is the network of curtains, seams, and unfinished roads between realms. Mortals describe it as distance. Elohim describe it as structure. The afflicted describe it as hunger. A body crossing a healthy threshold is translated from one set of natural laws into another. A body crossing a wounded threshold is forced to exist in both sets at once.
Pestilence is not a single disease. It is reality attempting to correct a traveler, while the traveler refuses to become what the new reality expects.
Mutation, calcification, sensory inversion, parasitic growth, impossible organs, beast traits, celestial scar tissue.
Compulsive pilgrimage, borrowed memories, prophetic mania, identity erosion, worship reflex, temporal confusion.
Power leakage, uncontrolled resonance, foreign elements, inherited Mandates, predatory adaptation, false transcendence.
Cults, quarantine states, purity laws, relic economies, bloodline hunting, sacrificial infrastructure, holy wars.
The Elohim did not invent corruption. They weaponized its interpretation. To many celestial factions, suffering is evidence that a mortal form is incomplete. Mutation becomes refinement. Obedience becomes harmony. Loss of identity becomes freedom from the burden of self. The most dangerous Elohim never tell mortals that they are being destroyed. They tell them they are being completed.
Intended state: cross the Veil safely. Negative effect: compulsion to cross repeatedly until no realm feels like home.
Intended state: survive hostile worlds. Negative effect: the body adapts faster than identity can follow.
Intended state: clarity of purpose. Negative effect: purpose becomes absolute; empathy is treated as malfunction.
Intended state: preserve what was lost. Negative effect: foreign lives overwrite the host.
Intended state: impose order. Negative effect: the afflicted believes disagreement is metaphysical error.
Intended state: unlock latent potential. Negative effect: power develops without the body, psyche, or culture to contain it.
The self remains present, but choices are bent by external resonance. Corruption can be seductive, useful, and socially rewarded.
Field sign: power feels easier when obeying the influence.
A person bound by a pact, Mandate, curse, or inherited consequence they cannot freely abandon.
Field sign: breaking the bond causes pain, decay, or collateral harm.
A stable supernatural condition that rewrites rules around the victim. Curses can persist after the source is dead.
Field sign: the affliction has consistent triggers and consequences.
Not ordinary mental illness: a supernatural perception fracture caused by too many realities, memories, or divine commands occupying one mind.
Field sign: the victim perceives truths that are real but cannot be organized safely.
Corrupt, Damned, Cursed, and Mad are not a ladder. A person can be one, several, or none. A perfectly sane priest may be Damned by an oath. A Cursed child may never become corrupt. A corrupted ruler may appear healthier and more competent than before. A Mad seer may be the only person in the room accurately perceiving a Veil breach.
The danger is not that the afflicted become monsters. The danger is that institutions learn to use the affliction before anyone learns to cure it.
Each of the eight is a faction that interprets Elohim doctrine as salvation rather than occupation, and each stands as the antagonistic parallel to one of the mortal peoples of the Concordance.
Where ordinary humanity once excelled at synthesis, the Fixed Crown believes synthesis is impurity. They accept Elohim doctrine as the final architecture of civilization and seek a single lawful template for every realm.
Their priests do not ask people to worship the Elohim. They ask people to stop improvising.
The Fifth Age reactivates the exact celestial systems these factions preserved. Their old dogma suddenly works again, which makes them more dangerous than ordinary cults: history is beginning to reward their faith.
A schism born from Elven Living Pattern theory. The Synod concluded that if objects can remember, then civilization can be edited like a spell. They cultivate forests, bloodlines, and cities until all variation is pruned away.
They do not burn books. They make the books remember something else.

The Menagerie resurrects the oldest Elohim crime: treating adaptation as destiny. They classify Kynari by idealized predator, guardian, laborer, oracle, and breeder forms, forcing “holy maturation” through relic exposure.
Their cages are ceremonial. Their victims are taught to call them cradles.

A militant Vantari order that believes the Storm Roads are celestial arteries and must be returned to Elohim control. Their choirs weaponize weather, turning realm-storms into moving crusades.
To them, a closed road is not murder. It is border maintenance.

Veilborn extremists who reject stable reality entirely. They claim the Grey Meridian was only a nursery and that true freedom requires becoming unanchored from all realms.
Their converts stop saying where they are from. Eventually, maps stop agreeing.

A prophetic order convinced that possibility is the source of suffering. They use Second Light to collapse uncertain futures toward a single Elohim-approved outcome.
They call mercy a delay in accepting inevitability.

Ten new antagonistic visual concepts. Names and factions are provisional lore designations.
Hollow ascetics who interpret missing identity as spiritual purity. They deliberately remove memory, face, voice, and desire, creating vessels designed to receive celestial Mandates without resistance.
Their holiest relic is an empty mask that remembers every face erased beneath it.

Celestial, Infernal, and Fallen lineages who reject the Concordance principle that origin does not determine moral worth. The Apostates claim divine ancestry grants jurisdiction over mortals.
They are the closest mortal civilization has come to recreating the Elohim caste system from below.

Black-grey particulate gathers in breath and tears. The victim begins remembering nearby deaths as personal memories.
Compulsive threshold crossing. Closed doors trigger panic; open Gates produce euphoria.
Reflections display alternate selves. Eventually the victim loses certainty that the reflected body is theirs.
Celestial Authority scars the nervous system. Gold-white lesions form along Anima channels; commands can trigger pain remotely.
Foreign voices synchronize thought. Groups finish each other’s sentences, then begin sharing beliefs, then desires.
The Veil expresses dormant ancestral traits unpredictably. Children may inherit traits from lineages thought extinct.
A purpose becomes physiologically necessary. Refusal causes seizures, calcification, or loss of Anima.
Latent power matures too fast. Ability outpaces discipline, creating catastrophic self-harm and environmental distortion.
Most antagonistic orders do not begin with torture. They begin with relief. The Veil produces conditions ordinary institutions cannot explain. Elohim-aligned factions arrive with vocabulary, ritual, medicine, and certainty. They can often reduce symptoms — because their doctrine is built around the same force causing them.
The Restoration Covenant learned this lesson at terrible cost: removing an affliction does not always restore the person who existed before it. A Kynari forced into a new form may choose to keep that body. A Hollow may recover memories and reject them. A person freed from a Mandate may discover they no longer know how to choose. The ethical goal is autonomy, not historical purity.
A cure that requires someone to become their old self against their will is another form of doctrine.
Reassert one realm, one body, one present moment. Used for phase-loss and Door Hunger.
Break the active connection to an Elohim, relic, or Mandate. Dangerous when the bond now supports vital functions.
Separate personal memory from foreign memory without erasing either.
Slow Overbloom so power develops at the speed of discipline.
Rebuild identity through chosen relationships, history, language, and self-authored ritual.
When cure is impossible, build a life around the condition without allowing it to become a weapon.
Nomad physicians reject a single universal threshold for personhood. Some Converted retain humor, loyalty, guilt, preference, and memory long after their bodies cease to look mortal. Others appear unchanged while their choices are entirely controlled by a foreign Mandate. Classification by appearance produced some of the worst massacres of the Restoration era.
The old world asked: “Can they be made normal?” The Restoration taught a better question: “Can they choose?”
The Eight Shadow Peoples are factions. The Pharaoh wound is environmental: a civilization forced to live beside a permanent scar in the Veil.
The Pharaoh Realm endured repeated Elohim incursions because it sits near a convergence of realm-paths. The First Eclipse War made that convergence unstable. Ahk Ra proved the most dangerous truth in celestial history: a mortal could absorb hostile forces, impose Authority upon them, and begin generating a self-sustaining form of transcendent power.
His fall created a special class of fear. Pharaoh bloodlines are monitored not only for power, but for convergence: Solar Authority, Ashen absorption, Veil resonance, and Stardust appearing in one vessel. Riven's birth triggered that fear because his signature resembled the Walking Star before he had taken a single conscious breath.
The Elohim fear pestilence when it destroys mortals. They fear Stardust when mortals learn to survive it.
Elohim-aligned orders see Riven as either the perfect vessel to canonize, the contagion that must be contained, or the proof that transcendence can escape celestial control.
“The Veil changes what crosses it.”
“The Elohim decide what that change is supposed to mean.”
